The last few weeks have flown by and the children are choosing work, concentrating for longer periods of time and showing more and more independence. There is always a busy hum of activity in a Montessori classroom because the use of the materials involves many motions – carrying, moving, pouring, speaking and the constant use of hands.
“The hands are the instruments of man’s intelligence.” – Montessori
The children continued to enjoy the flag work and learning the names of countries in North America. The Year Two children walked to the G8 flags with the Canadian and American flags in hand. We identified the flags from the G8 countries.
All of the children enjoyed working with apples this week. The Montessori class always uses concrete materials to teach the child in a hands-on way. We cut the apples in half as a cross-section of the apple, and used this as a stamp. The children also enjoyed counting, sorting and tasting apples. We will continue with the Life Cycle of an Apple Tree work, Parts of the Apple puzzle and some cooking with apples.
The class will welcome Fall on Monday, and work with Fall-Autumn activities over the next few months.
Have a wonderful weekend,
